Eleven people include five juveniles, were injured in a four-vehicle crash early Wednesday afternoon on northbound Route 1 at Randolph Avenue. One man, who suffered a serious leg injury, was airlifted to University Hospital in Newark. Just before 12:05 p.m. Wednesday, police received a call about the crash near the Sansone Auto Mall, Woodbridge Traffic Sgt. Philip Agosta said. Arriving officers found two cars in the intersection – a 2007 gray Toyota Tundra pickup truck that had been stopped at the traffic light for Route 1 north at Randolph Avenue when it was apparently rear-ended by a white 2005 Lexus ES330, Agosta said. The Lexus then collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Tundra collided with a 2014 Subaru Outback, Agosta said. Agosta said the Lexus was occupied by two adults and five juveniles. The driver was flown to University Hospital in Newark by a New Jersey State Police helicopter, with a serious leg injury. Everyone else from that vehicle was taken to University Hospital by ambulance. They all had moderate injuries, Agosta said. The Tundra was occupied by three men, two of which were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway by ambulance, and one went to University Hospital in Newark by ambulance, Agosta said. The driver of the Chevrolet, a man, was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway by ambulance, Agosta said. The driver of the Subaru, a woman, was not injured in the crash and was able to drive her car away, Agosta said. The state Department of Transportation shut down the highway following the crash and traffic was backed up in the area. The scene was cleared about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Agosta said. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
